Good morning…
Flying home from Ohio in the early morning dark, I looked out the window and saw the intriguing image above. We were flying forward with black direction arrows pointing back. Somehow it felt like the world we are living in right now. Confusion. Conflicting messages. Flying forward while being directed backward.
It reminds me of an example from Dallas Willard’s The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God, a very challenging book we read in our spiritual direction training program.

Recently a pilot was practising high-speed maneouvres in a jet fighter. She turned the controls for what she thought was a steep ascent – and flew straight into the ground. She was unaware that she was had been flying upside down.
This is a parable of human existence in our times – not exactly that everyone is crashing, though there is enough of that – but most of us as individuals and world society as a whole, live at high-speed and often with no clue whether we are flying upside down or right-side up.

Even in this high-speed world, might we get our bearings, growing in our awareness? There is a horizon, and there is a Creator of the horizon.
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8, ESV).
Disregarding the loud direction arrows of the world, might we peacefully glide forward on the power of our living Lord?
Daily, we do justice.
Empowered, we love kindness.
In humility, we walk with our God.
Instead of crashing in confusion, we are calmly carried forward to the people, the places, and the purposes handpicked by our Creator.
