life

Good morning…

At Scott’s Antique Market, I found this Mother’s Day gift for my mom. I sent it with a card for her to hang on a doorknob in their senior living community in Ohio. The cross stitched treasure reminds me of the many handmade creations my mom made as gifts over the years. The words share a sweet blessing.

Life Is A Patchwork

Stitch a little bit of lovin’,

Add a lot of tender care.

Sew together with some kindness,

Let the sun shine everywhere.

Choose a pattern for your life work,

Add some fun along the way.

Life is like a valued patchwork,

Keep it precious day by day.

On Mother’s Day, I talked face to face or on the phone to all four of our kids and our daughter-in-law (who is due with our first grandbaby on May 15th). I talked with Steve’s 94 year old mom and my parents by phone, and, in Spirit, I was with my mom and our extended family from states a way. The photos from our celebrations created a fun patchwork, precious and valued.

Alongside the bubbles and the smiles, there are losses and tears, cancer and fears, heartbreaks and doubts, struggles to survive and the pain of living without. Births and deaths are sewn in, year after year, waiting, waiting, waiting for God’s answers to become clear. With God in charge of our expanding connections, family and friends can grow sturdy and strong, up close together or apart for miles long.

What a multi-faceted Mother’s Day I experienced yesterday, enjoying life’s priceless patchwork of hope and healing, pain and possibilities, hellos and goodbyes.

Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life (1 Timothy 6:17-19, MSG).
