Good morning…

I have always been puzzled by Proverbs 9:10a: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Things we fear we avoid, we cower beneath, we put up our guard against. To avoid, to cower, to guard against the Lord does not seem wise to me.

For the first time this truth made sense when a friend defined “fear” as “a sense of reverent awe for something we cannot control.” As I exchanged one word, joy exploded everywhere: “The awe of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

In complete awe of the Maker of people, sunsets, and all living things, might we treat with reverence all the things we cannot control?

From the starting place of awe, we watch as wisdom unfolds.
