grace

Good morning…

As I visited my new nephew in Ohio last week, I went to the bathroom before leaving for the airport to fly back to Atlanta. As I stepped back into their kitchen, I saw the sight above – the hand painted plaque I had commissioned for my sister’s son and his wife when they married in 2018. At the time, I had been processing the concept of GRACE and came up with this saying.

Be Grateful, not entitled.

Be Renewed, not stuck.

Be Attentive, not hurried.

Be Curious, not self-centered.

Be Encouraging, not critical.

Quietly trickling down through it all is the word GRACE, in capital letters.

Tonight I wake in the middle of the night at our son’s home in Athens, our son who was just married on Labor Day weekend. The newlyweds asked us to help them with their first garage sale, an offer we delightfully accepted. One of the first things I admired in their new home was the wedding gift my sister bought and framed for them – a print of downtown Charleston, our daughter-in-law’s hometown where their gorgeous wedding was held. Personalized and permanent, the plaque reads: Kyler and Chandler, September 3, 2023.

What soulful symbols of God’s GRACE quietly trickling down through our family, from one generation to the next.

Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! (Ephesians 2:7-8, MSG).

As we head into the holiday week at hand, in what ways do you sense the GRACE of God quietly trickling down through it all?
