happiness

Good morning…

I pull out my copy of In the Shelter by Padraig O Tuama and turn to page 25. I read on from the sentence that first captivated me on Sunday.

“Good writing, the adage tells us, is when we read something we’ve always known but never been able to put to words,” writes Padraig. “I remember the moment I read Jane Kenyon’s poem. I understood the quiet approach of happiness. I understood that if happiness were to approach, it’d be wise to approach from the side, because I was likely to distrust anything too exuberant.”

Quiet. Trusting. Nothing to exuberant. I too understood something I’ve always known when I read The Suitor by Jane Kenyon.

poem

The Spirit of God quietly whispers. The one who listens to me, who carefully seeks me in everyday things and delays action until my way is apparent, that one will find true happiness (Proverbs 8:34, VOICE).

Listen. Seek God in everyday things. Delay action. The way will become apparent, as true happiness approaches quietly.
