Good morning…

Slowly, prayerfully, she served up a heaping bowl of wisdom from over the phone. Then I asked her to text me the sacred reading from miles away. Now we all dive into the delicious feast together.

epiphany

Foreign-to-me words now become for us a meaningful meal.

Epiphany, with a capital “E”, what might this mean?” I ask myself.

A sudden, intuitive perception of something profoundly essential. Insight. Inspiration. Illumination.

“What does propitious mean?” I wonder now.

Full of promise, a good, favorable, opportune time. Brave. Bright. Beneficial.

And next, “Fecund, what does this strange word mean?”

Very productive and creative intellectually. Fertile. Fruitful. Fascinating.

Lady Wisdom goes to town, stands in a prominent place, and invites everyone within sound of her voice: “Are you confused about life, don’t know what’s going on? Come with me, oh come, have dinner with me! I’ve prepared a wonderful spread—fresh-baked bread, roast lamb, carefully selected wines. Leave your impoverished confusion and live! Walk up the street to a life with meaning” (Proverbs 9:3-6, MSG).

“Lady Wisdom is a poetic personification representing Christ, the Wisdom of God,” says the footnote for the first verse. “The Hebrew word chokmah (“wisdom”) can also mean ‘sacred sense.’ It is the understanding and insight given only by God.”

“Part of the art of living wisely is to learn to recognize and attend to such profound openings in one’s life,” O’Donohue reminds as we rise from the table to stroll up the street with Christ, a little slower, a wee bit wiser.
