ornament

Good morning…

My new favorite tree ornament is a transparent two inch square holding a tiny ice skater. Handmade by our wildly creative friend Corinne Adams, this symbol sums up my Advent season thus far, gliding along almost effortlessly, empowered by the Spirit of God with us. Yet today is Monday and by the time we skate through this Saturday, our celebration of Christmas 2021 will be done, completed, just a part of our shared memory.

It dawns on me now, how we glide through this important week with God matters, it really matters.

Like a trained athlete does before taking her turn on the ice, take a moment with me and visualize the week ahead. What still needs to be accomplished with God? With God, what life-giving priorities will continue to take shape? How will we keep our focus, our balance, our joy in the journey with God?

A bit overwhelmed by all that lies ahead, might we be like Mary, the young mother of Jesus? When she was told of all that would be accomplished through her this week many years ago, she was greatly perplexed, thoroughly shaken, bewildered and baffled (Luke 1:29). Mary said, “But how could this happen?” (Luke 1:34a, TPT).

Gabriel answered, “The Spirit of Holiness will fall upon you and almighty God will spread his shadow of power over you in a cloud of glory!” (v. 35). The footnote for this verse explains, “The Greek word used as a metaphor, ‘spread his shadow over you,’ is also the word used at Jesus’ transfiguration when the cloud of glory overshadowed Jesus on the mountain (Mark 9:7).”

May almighty God spread his shadow of power over each one of us, as we glide effortlessly with God through this very important week.
