Good morning…

This week in our therapeutic community group, I was asked to read aloud a tender poem by Rashani Rea. “The Unbroken” offers us a glimpse into the soulful surprises we may find nestled inside our deepest sorrows.

I am used to trying to process these opposite forces.

broken – unbroken

shattered – unshatterable

sorrow – joy

fragility – strength

Yet, as we journeyed through this poem together, I was surprised by a pair of shocking new words.

serrated – sing

“Serrated” is such a painful word. Jagged. Uneven. Rough. Sharp. Notched with point-like teeth. “Sing” is so unexpected in this poem. Praise. Croon. Serenade. Harmonize. Lift a joyful noise.

While we are broken and shattered, sorrowful and fragile, might we learn to sing from an inner place of unbreakable wholeness?

Choosing cards that depicted the dualistic dynamics, we wrote our words on two sides of one acorn. Like naming a seed, I wrote “serrated – sing.”

Sometimes in life, we experience serrated edges cutting us deep, slicing open our innermost place, freeing the gratitude of our own saving song.

“There is a hollow space too vast for words through which we pass with each loss, out of whose darkness we are sanctified into being,” notices Rashani.

Having experience this hollow darkness himself, Jesus prays to his Father on our behalf. Sanctify them in the truth [set them apart for Your purposes, make them holy]; Your word is truth (John 17:17, AMP).
