light

Good morning…

When I wake around 1:00 am, I notice stripes of light resting on our bathroom floor and tub. With natural light silently breaking through the shutters of a nearby window, I think to myself, “The moon must be filling up with light.”

Our little dog Gracie takes me out often in the middle of the night to empty her tiny bladder. We step out into the chilly dark. Above our neighborhood street light, I look up to see the nearly full moon gracing the quiet night sky.

Coming inside, I check my calendar. Sure enough, we are just three nights away from the next full moon. The moon is gradually filling with light.

“We don’t expect too much light just now. Not yet.” Yesterday we gathered in a friend’s home, reading aloud words written by Ron Greer on page 23 of The Quiet House. “We were never promised the brilliance of daylight on this path, but we do long for light in our darkness, hope in our despair, direction in our mourning, and support in our loneliness.”

“And I find there is light,” writes Ron, “not enough to eliminate the darkness, but enough to illuminate our way through it. Yes, illumination is what we are seeking. The light illuminating our path, if only a few steps ahead, showing us where we are to go, how we are to travel this steep, winding, and rocky trail.”

Loss of a spouse. Death of a child. Facing medical challenges. Alzheimers altering everything. Divorce, depression, angry division. The sad, gruesome wages of war. Where are we to go? God, how are we to travel this steep, winding, and rocky trail at our feet?

Waking in the dark, we long for light to peek through the shutters in a nearby window, giving us just what we need in this very moment. Hope in our despair. Direction in our mourning. Support in our loneliness. Like the moon quietly filling with light, God will gradually illuminate our way through.

Hope.

Direction.

Support in our loneliness.

You are the one who lights my lamp— the Lord my God illumines my darkness (Psalm 18:28, CEB).
