Good morning…
A few days back, my morning message was about Jesus sitting in our passenger seat patiently encouraging us, “Start the car.” Refusing to honor our request for black and white instructions printed out ahead of time, God directs us, turn by turn, with his relentlessly relational voice.
A subscriber added a thought we so often feel: “I would love for God to (Garmin). Speak the directions. I cannot hear Him….. Thank you for speaking to me daily. I look forward to your God wisdom….”
Right away I responded: “YES. You are so right. A clear, audible voice would be awesome. I suppose settling for sensing God’s direction over time may be our best option.”
Pondering it further, a few days later I elaborated: “Wouldn’t it be wonderful for God to speak like Siri? We would love to hear God’s voice come to us loud and clear, directing us mile by mile, unmistakably, all the time.”
Instead, God chooses to guide us forward through these morning messages and other daily devotionals. Through the wonder of nature and the wisdom of Scripture. Through our dreams, deep desires, and dialoguing with faithful friends. Through art and animals, books and movies, senses and songs. Day after day after day after day.
We are designed to live in interactive relationship with our constantly creative God. Honing our holy listening skills, we learn to rely on Jesus’ moment-to-moment guidance. Through back and forth conversation, we are coaxed to develop ears that see and eyes that hear our LORD’s invisible ever-presence.
God always answers, one way or another,
even when people don’t recognize his presence.
“In a dream, for instance, a vision at night,
when men and women are deep in sleep,
fast asleep in their beds—
God opens their ears
and impresses them with warnings
To turn them back from something bad they’re planning,
from some reckless choice,
And keep them from an early grave,
from the river of no return” (Job 33:14-18, MSG).
