toes

Good morning…

This, the first day of August, marks a change of season for many families in our community. This month, summer quietly comes to an end and the school year too soon begins. What a perfect time to look closely at who we are becoming. Becoming who we really are, we consider these three questions today.

  • How might you describe an absence, a sense of bewilderment that invites the possible?
  • What are you learning from things you dropped and picked up and dropped again?
  • In what ways are you living like a piece of straw set parallel on a river, letting the flow carry you downstream?

When Steve and I were newly married, we worked with the youth group at a Presbyterian church where he served as the associate pastor in Gettysburg, PA. One thing we enjoyed annually with the kids was our white-water rafting trip down the Youghiogheny River. Before boarding our rafts with our trained guides, each year we received the same instruction: “If you fall out of the boat, lay back on your life jacket, lift up your toes and point your feet downriver. Relax and let the power of the current eventually take you to shore.”

Over the years, I have learned to lean back and to live “toes up.” When I am tossed out into life’s elements, I try to remind myself: “Relax. Trust the power of the Current. I will be carried to the people, the places, and the purposes God intends.”

I said to myself, “Relax and rest. God has showered you with blessings. Soul, you’ve been rescued from death; Eye, you’ve been rescued from tears; And you, Foot, were kept from stumbling” (Psalm 116:7-8, MSG).
