cross

Good morning…

This week I happened upon a powerful quote by Madeleine Delbrêl.

“Once we have heard God’s Word, we no longer have the right not to accept it; once we have accepted it, we no longer have the right not to let it become flesh in us; once it has become flesh in us, we no longer have the right to keep it for ourselves alone. Henceforward, we belong to all those who are waiting for the Word.

… the Word of God is not brought to the ends of the world in a suitcase. We carry it in ourselves.”

In the very next moment Richard Rohr’s February 9th devotional was shared by a friend, carrying on the conversation. “We are each a God-carrier, a tabernacle of the Holy Spirit, indwelt by God the holy and most blessed Trinity.”

Now in these early morning hours, I am drawn to Romans 10:14-17 in The Message translation.

But how can people call for help if they don’t know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven’t heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them? And how is anyone going to tell them, unless someone is sent to do it? That’s why Scripture exclaims,

A sight to take your breath away!
Grand processions of people telling all the good things of God!

But not everybody is ready for this, ready to see and hear and act. Isaiah asked what we all ask at one time or another: “Does anyone care, God? Is anyone listening and believing a word of it?”

The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to.

My dear friends, we each carry God’s living Word in us today. As our life quietly speaks, might each person we meet be drawn to the One who can be trusted? Empowered to be God-carriers, may we be made ready to see, hear, and act. We are God’s response to those asking, “Does anyone care?”
