A White Feather From Heaven

Good morning…

“Another minute. Another day. Year after year. Life lives through us. What an incredible gift.” I had just finished reading these final words from our Saturday morning blog post, We Live Through Death. The message shared a moving poem by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer entitled Still Here.

Suddenly, I felt a prick on my left arm, and, looking down, I saw this small white feather. I smiled at the mysterious creativity of God. The living Spirit, bridging earth and heaven, grabbed my full attention. Somehow had I been reached from the untouchable beyond? The single white feather resting on my arm drew me back to this poignant poem.

On My Sleeve, the Smallest White Feather by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

I never saw them before you died.
Now I find them in the sidewalk,
in the forest, in my hair,
on the seat in a restaurant—
white feathers might show up anywhere.
Part of me says, Be rational.
Part of me falls into the sweetness
of how it feels, as if you’ve found a way
to find me from wherever you are,
and offer me feathers,
as if you’re trying to touch me,
as if you’re suggesting I could fly.

One white feather. My grey sleeve. A veil between heaven and earth, gently opened wide.

Even though our human understanding is patchy, clouded over, incomplete, the power of our eternal God is always at work. But whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Lord’s Spirit is, there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:16-17, ISV).

Eternal life lives through us, thriving on earth as it is thriving in heaven, as the Spirit of the Lord accomplishes it. What a freeing gift!
