gratitude

Good morning…

As I wake in gratitude for these early morning hours, I envision myself quietly living my favorite Mother Teresa quote: “I am a little pencil in the hand of writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.” As I invest two or three hours prayerfully pondering, writing, and editing words during the wee watches of most nights, the Spirit scribbles a daily love letter to each of you belonging to our written word community. Spurred by the Spirit, you often pass along God’s love letter to your own friends and family members.

Right now, my thoughts are drawn to a more earthy metaphor. Might I also be a little dandelion held in the hand of a mysteriously blowing God?

“Jesus’ life is spent, not saved,” writes Margaret Silf in the final week of our study of Simple Faith. “He shows us through his ministry and teaching that we are to give ourselves away, not hoard ourselves and our gifts and resources.”

Similarly my spiritual mentor, Christian mystic Betty Skinner, used to regularly say, “Well, it’s a good thing to give your life away. Then you don’t have to worry with it anymore.”

As the breath of God scatters and spreads a daily bundle of translucent seeds, my tiny stem is left delightfully bare. Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things (Ecclesiastes 11:5, NLV).

After programing our message and pushing “send,” I will quietly crawl back into bed to enjoy the sweetness of my second sleep. I trust that every word written in love will land and sprout and spread more seeds as our living LORD sees fit.

P.S. These devotionals are a free gift to you, as free as the seeds of a dandelion. “It’s all free!” affirms Isaiah 55:1b (TLB).

Since our writing ministry takes place outside of my work hours at the church, at the end of each fall and spring semester I remind our written word community that we receive freewill donations to help cover the ongoing cost of our SueToYou ministry. Costs include a monthly fee to send our daily Mailchimp messages, paying our web designer to troubleshoot and keep our website updated, continuing my ongoing education in spiritual direction, and reimbursing the hours I spend both writing each night and prayerfully responding privately to our growing number of readers. If the Spirit of God ever blows through your heart, urging you to give a gratitude gift, please use the “Donate” button at the bottom of each daily blog post.
