Good morning…

“A lady gave this to us at the market this morning,” a friend texted on Saturday. “I absolutely love it! So good right? So simple and yet something I had never really thought of.”

“I love it too,” I replied. “Listening to God requires W.A.I.T.ing, asking ourselves, “Why am I talking, trying too hard, terriblizing? We need to give our mouth a break so our ears can open. Such great learning on a fall football Saturday.”

It’s a little different take on the famous song from the musical Hamilton. Burr tells Hamilton to “talk less, smile more” and warns, “Don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for”. With God, might we “talk less, listen more”?

In the midst of our daily lives, it is important for us to share our honest feelings and thoughts with our Best Friend, and, at the same time, we need to work our way to the place where we get to the end of our opinions to make space for the guiding voice of God. When we exhaust our rantings about what we are are against or what we are for, we become blank slates upon which the Eternal writes His expansive story.

We have a special role in His plan. He calls us to life by His message of truth so that we will show the rest of His creatures His goodness and love. Listen, open your ears, harness your desire to speak, and don’t get worked up into a rage so easily, my brothers and sisters. Human anger is a futile exercise that will never produce God’s kind of justice in this world (James 1:18-20, VOICE).
