Good morning…

“Beautiful young people are accidents of nature,” said Eleanor Roosevelt. “But beautiful old people are works of art.”

Last week, I shared my birthday lunch with beautiful 91 year old Betty Skinner. She truly is a work of art. Kitty Crenshaw and Dr. Cathy Snapp, authors of The Hidden Life Awakened, the book chronicling Betty’s extraordinary life, also slid into the restaurant booth in Ponte Vedra, Florida. As we marveled together at the Spirit’s movement within and among us, Cathy said, “Bettina, what birthday affirmation would you give Sue as she begins her 54th year of life?”

Betty closed her sparkly eyes and sat quiet for a moment. Tilting her wise, tiny face she gradually grasped God’s gift. With a smile lighting up her loving lips, Betty held my hand and spoke timeless truth: “Hang on! Enjoy every moment in a positive way. Don’t get into the negative, it’ll knock you flat.”

Chronicling for myself a special slice of Betty’s extraordinary life, I jotted her birthday blessing on a scrap of paper in my purse.

Hang on!
Enjoy every moment in a positive way.
Don’t get into the negative, it’ll knock you flat. – Betty Skinner 3/23/17

So come on, let’s leave the preschool fingerpainting exercises on Christ and get on with the grand work of art. Grow up in Christ. The basic foundational truths are in place: turning your back on “salvation by self-help” and turning in trust toward God; baptismal instructions; laying on of hands; resurrection of the dead; eternal judgment. God helping us, we’ll stay true to all that. But there’s so much more. Let’s get on with it! (Hebrews 6:1-3, MSG).

…Sue…
