Good morning…
Being with my spiritual mentor Betty Skinner last weekend reminds me of the “Be the Ball” scene from the 1980 movie Caddyshack.
Traveling to Ponte Vedra, Florida to visit with 93-year-old Betty, I had questions about life, about faith, about God. I have admired the way Betty has landed herself in the center of God’s will for her one ordinary life, and I wanted Betty’s input on how to give God’s holistic healing my best shot. While strolling beside each other up and down the rolling hills of our attentive minds, we enjoyed life-giving, back-and-forth conversation. Her centering wisdom reminds me of the whimsical words of Chevy Chase in this beloved comedy, “There is a force in the universe that makes everything happen. All you have to do is get in touch with it. Find your center. Hear nothing. Feel nothing.” And later Chevy whispers, “Just relax. Find your center. Picture the shot. Turn off the sound. Just let it happen. Just be the ball. Just be the ball.”
In our every day life, we gradually learn to get in touch, find our center, and focus our whole self on “being the ball,” being carried on God’s power, an invisible power actively at work redeeming everything, everyone. Through a lifetime of practice, we begin to access more fully the ever-present power of our one Triune God, Creator, Christ, Spirit. And He Himself existed and is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. [His is the controlling, cohesive force of the universe.] (Colossians 1:17, AMP).
With an ear to deeper wisdom, enjoy this funny movie clip, considering your best ways to “be the ball,” being carried on the powerful Force making everything happen.
