yoke

Good morning…

I revisited. I reworked. I reimagined yesterday’s blog post. I revisited, reworked, reimagined with God for a very long time. (If you feel drawn, please check out the new version of The Fence Around My Heart). Then I opened up the Wednesday blessing from author Kate Bowler, a prayerful email waiting for my time and attention.

“And rekindle a tenderness in my own uncertain heart,” her honest prayer concludes, “for my own small moments of courage, for you have given me nothing to do but what’s mine to be done.”

Rekindle. I love that word. Every single morning, the Spirit of God rekindles us. Rekindle reminds me of the new Bible verse I learned yesterday. From now on I’m taking the yoke from your neck and splitting it up for kindling. I’m cutting you free from the ropes of your bondage (Nahum 1:13, MSG).

Now the voice of Jesus quietly slips into the vacant space in my vulnerable heart.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV). Yoked securely beside the living Christ, a tenderness is rekindled in my own uncertain heart. God, please continue to equip me for my own small moments of courage. Help me to remember this enduring truth: You give me nothing to do but what’s mine to be done.

The familiar wisdom of Jesus bubbles up again. “I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I to you, you will produce plenty of fruit. But separated from me you won’t be able to do anything” (John 15:5, ERV).

Once again, I cozy up in the companionship of Christ, slipping my whole self into a light, easy yoke. Day after day, I am given by God nothing to do but what is mine to be done. Reconnected and rekindled, with a free and grateful heart, I walk courageously into the small moments ahead.
