Good morning…

“I learned the coolest thing about trees,” a friend from afar said over the phone. My ears perked up and my curiosity sparked. So, I got out a pen to amplify her insights, recording her thoughts in my royal blue journal, a journal which just happened to be named “Heart of the Tree Journal.” This is roughly what I learned.

Trees communicate with each other through their root systems. When one tree is damaged or reduced to a stump, surrounding trees send out healing properties. Stumps sprout again with support from the health of nearby trees, activating a natural community of care established by our Creator. People are a lot like trees. We need nurturing relationships to help heal our hurts. Even when we feel as if we are reduced to a stump, we are sustained by the strong root system of the loved ones around us.

After sharing wisdom taught by trees and discussing for a while our everyday lives, my friend reflected, “I sense you settling into a place you never wanted to be planted, and God is growing in you a gift, the gift of expressing the invisible things none of us fully understand. You seem okay with not totally getting it. To me, it feels like your trust is growing stronger than your fears, and that internal shift sends healing properties out to all of us.”

May it be said of you and me and every single tree: “They will not be afraid of bad news. They are confident because they trust in the Lord” (Psalm 112:7, ERV).
