parents

Good morning…

Since I took this photo of my parents last July, a lot has changed in their lives. Her fall. Her stroke. Her stint in the ICU. Tons of prayers. Miraculously she came back to us. A second fall. More time in the care center. A COVID outbreak. Ugly symptoms.

Today for the first time since her second fall in May, my mom wakes up at home. Though she is confined with my dad to their independent living villa until her ten day COVID quarantine passes, thankfully, she moved through her scary symptoms to finally sound like herself again. Still no x-ray results. Still wheelchair bound. Still no physical therapy plan. Still no clearly defined in-home care. Gradually these important details will form into their new normal. The truth has simplified down to one thing: my parents are happy to be at home together. Yesterday the joy of freedom was palpable over the phone.

The love my parents share reminds me of a few lines from Kate Bowler’s inspirational message from yesterday:

“Behold. This is not a problem to be solved. This is a person to be loved.

And how lucky are we?

These people. These loves. These precious, precious, precious days.

Thanks be to God.”

Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured… (Philippians 4:6-7a, AMPC).

Exchanging our anxious requests for the tranquil peace of God, we behold the precious gift of prayer: “How lucky are we?”
